22 Feb 09 Off to Hawkesbury (for business, sigh) – recommended hotel with Internet access ?

Best Western L'HeritageOK, so it’s like I’m off today to Hawkesbury for a quick jaunt for some business, and although I used to live near there (believe it or not!) I don’t remember the town that well.

So far it’s looking like the Best Western L’Heritage is the most suitable Hawkesbury hotel that has Internet access…

Anyone ever use it? Is it reliable ? Do they block ports or otherwise filter connections ?

24 Jan 09 Is the Logitech Harmony 890 better than the Harmony 880 ? Yes – but… a review shortly

Harmony® 890 Advanced Universal Remote

So I have spent a year with my Logitech Harmony 880 Universal Remote Control… and of course, now Logitech has unleashed the Harmony® 890 Advanced Universal Remote.

Is the Harmony 890 worth the $349.99 (US dollars) price? Of course not.

26 Nov 08 Indian Government / military requests that Twitter “shut down” #mumbai page / updates on operations

It’s been incredible following the social media updates on the 11/26 Mumbai attacks in India on various channels,.. the old school media (BBC, CNN, IBN, etc etc) is all fine, but hopelessly following behind the social media.

Twitter has managed to stay up (accessible) during these sad attacks in India and the #mumbai tag has been flooded with updates from the ground that the traditional media simply can’t keep up with; be it for school closings, updates on ground activities from individuals, and indeed military operations. So much so that the military forces have asked that people stop realtime updating the operations and apparently the Indian government has asked Twitter to shut down the #mumbai tag (kind of impossible)…

26 Nov 08 Twitter suspends SMS notification for Canadians due to SMS cost increases by Canadian carriers

Twitter Logo

Well, it was a matter of time with the few Canadian cell phone carriers having jacked up their rates for SMS text messages. Bell was the first one to do it, when they revealed that outbound text SMS messages would be $0.15 as of August 1st… and despite a huge consumer backlash and government involvement: nothing happened.

Now Twitter has officially announced they will no longer deliver SMS updates to Canadians (who use cell phone carriers in Canada such as Bell, Rogers, Fido and Telus) due to rocketing costs. They will still accept inbound Twitter status updates to their Canadian shortcode (21212)… but it sort of kills the functionality of Twitter for Canadians who were just getting used to the fast updates from their Twitter contacts.

I use Twitter Mobile in Canada on my HTC Touch with a mobile web browser to do status updates thanks to my Bell Mobility $7 unlimited data plan so if you have that you can set up a mechanism using a Twitter RSS to email feed system where you could get Twitter updates by email to your mobile device (presuming you have an unlimited – or generous – on-device data plan)…

29 Sep 08 Outlook Mobile on Windows Mobile 6.1 on the HTC Touch : getting Outlook to behave

Ahh, well I love my HTC Touch, but it certainly has it’s quirks – many of which are no doubt related to the Windows Mobile Operating System…. although 6.1 is definitely a great improvement, it’s still a challenge for Outlook Mobile to co-exist peacefully with concurrent requests from a desktop running Outlook 2007 speaking to the same POP3/IMAP SMTP mailserver.

There, enough tech venting for this evening ;)
