I’ve been preparing (yeah, on a Sunday) for a series of hands-on training sessions I will be giving to knowledge workers in Ottawa this coming week and have been defragging and optimising the IM issues in my mind. Although I am a tech guy, I have always kept IM and KM issues close to my heart and remember… IT exists primarily to provide IM solutions!
It’s rare that I see such eloquently simplified presentations such as Clay Shirky has done in Ontology is Overrated: Categories, Links, and Tags …
There’s a good reason why that particular piece is PageRank 6! If you have to explain modern ways of managing information, or why the file system is dead (yes, the file system is dead, finito) and how the Internet has changed the way we manage information…
This article is a must to understand modern ontology…. and why it doesn’t always work.

Well, the remote manipulator system has been sold to US defense military contractor Alliant Technologies.
editI initally had staff remove this article because I thought it may have been a bit too incendiary, but after consulting with fellow Canadian friends who are as equally shocked by this news, it is back up…. – Robin
The true sad news is not about the Canadarm being sold to the US military , but that essentially MDA (MacDonald Dettwiler Corporation) has sold RADARSAT 2 to the US military establishment less than 1 month after the December 14th launch.
So, RADARSAT is now in US hands as is the Canadarm… a sad day for Canadian involvement (waning over the years) in the non-military aerospace business.
As a side note, ATK mentions that it is the largest supplier of weapons ammunition in the US, primarily to the US military clientele.

Well, I could be accused of being biased… but who can deny and refute the legitimacy of a fourth generation of computer software being used to validate the economic viability of energy efficient solutions ?
Kudos to the NRCan and RETScreen team…

Well, it’s not really a surprise that IBM and Cognos finally jointly confirmed the acquisition of Cognos by the Armonk, New York giant in IT services.
The deal was for “roughly” $5 billion or $58 USD per Cognos share. Nice arbitrage play on the plumetting US dollar .. kudos to the IBM accounting strategists
Cognos is one of those great Canadian success stories and it’s a bittersweet pill to see it go (like so many others) to foreign ownership. Their business intelligence products are Tier 1 quality.
edit: That title should reach “nears acquisition” and not “closes acquisition” since officially this is just an offer… mind you at a 15% premium on the stock price!
