Firefox 3.0.1 released for download with critical security fixes including the Carpet Bomb threat on Firefox for Safari

July 17th, 2008

Firefox 3.0.1 was just released for download and it’s highly recommended that you immediately upgrade your FF 3.x installation (tell me that you’re not running a beta or RC version of 3) as it includes several critical security fixes.

I’m hitting post on this article and then doing the upgrade on a few machines here at work… yeah, at work. :/

Will it blend ? Blendtec blends iPhone 3G into dust - blender & iPhone 3G dusty remains on eBay again!

July 17th, 2008

Ah, after a nice Angus Burger from McD… a lunchtime article.

Well, Tom Dickson of Blendtec must have been amongst those waiting in line for the iPhone 3G as they’ve pulled off another one of their “Will it blend?” campaigns, only this time it’s with an iPhone 3G. Yes, the point is to display how powerful the somewhat pricey Blendtec blenders are.

This is a classic example of Web 2.0 mashed-up with Marketing 2.0 … brilliant strategy.

Check out the Blendtec iPhone 3G blending video:

As with the first Blendtec iPhone (1.0) that was turned into dust, the iPhone remains and blender are being auctioned off on eBay with proceeds going to the children’s charity Primary Children’s Medical Center.

I guess you could call this the ultimate “unlocked” iphone hehe.

Official: GoDaddy to offer .ca domain names as CIRA-certified domain registrar !

July 14th, 2008

It’s official: GoDaddy to offer .ca domain name registration – GoDaddy Canada office in Ontario is open.

The news was somewhat buried in a GoDaddy press release announcing their sponsorship of Ron Fellows in the #5 GoDaddy NASCAR race vehicle…

I like verbatim quotes, so here goes:

The Go Daddy Group, Inc. is leveraging the sponsorship to officially announce entry into the Canadian market with its new subsidiary, Go Daddy Domains Canada. While Go Daddy already counts some of its 5.5 million customers in Canada, it’s working to serve even more. Go Daddy Domains Canada recently opened its office in Ontario, Canada. It is a certified .CA registrar and by race time, hopes to be offering customers .CA domain names.

So, what does this mean? Well, GoDaddy is now CIRA-certified and you will soon see a non-stop stream of email and web promotions announcing their ubiquitous 10-15-25% coupon code promotions for .ca domains.

I’m intrigued how much influence Adam Dicker, who is VP of the GoDaddy TDNAM domain name aftermarket division had in this foray into the burgeoning Canadian domaining marketplace. Adam is highly respected Canadian domainer most well-known for his DNForum.com domainer site. He was also recently involved in a pretty well-publicized scandal when he bid on domains listed in the TDNAM marketplace.

Is this good for .ca domain holders? I think so – GoDaddy will add some serious exposure for .ca domains and provide for some additional registrar competition.

The Canadian in me wants to support the real Canadian registrars though; MyID.ca, Namespro.ca and the others…

Revolution News 3.0 Theme for WordPress released today - the best news blog theme around ?

July 14th, 2008

Brian Gardner today announced the long awaited release of the Revolution News 3.0 Theme for WordPress

Revolution News is one of the most popular (and rightfully so) themes for WordPress sites - it’s not free, with the theme selling at $79.99 for a Revolution News single-use license - good for use on one domain or site.

They also have a “multiple use” license which allows you use Revolution News on multiple sites for $199.99 …

Brian suggests that sites wishing to go to the latest Revolution News 3.0 version do so from scratch as there are many code changes that would benefit from a so-called clean install.

A few of the new features include:

  • All of the 3 sidebar zones now support widgets
  • There is a theme options page within the WP admin page
  • The comments section now supports Gravatars
  • For those of you monetizing (or trying to monetize ) your blog with Google AdSense, Revolution News 3 now supports AdSense code integration between posts and comments
  • There are distinct templates for the “archive” and “blog” page areas of your site

I will be most likely deploying (and customizing) Revolution News 3.0 here in the next few days.

See a live trial version of Revolution News 3.0 here.

This is breaking news so the theme should be available for download in the 24 hours or so.

Steve Ballmer gets egged in Budapest, Hungary - recovers nicely

July 11th, 2008

Lunchtime funny I found on the tube…

I’m a bit surprised there wasn’t more security for the head of one of the biggest companies in the world…

I like Steve’s look of shock during, and recovery after, the guy throws the eggs…
