OneCare : Service Executable has encountered a problem and needs to close ; error message & crash

We are sorry for the inconvenience

Grrr, this has been my experience with Windows Live OneCare 2.0 … after having uninstalled the 1.5 version of OneCare and installed the 90 day trial of the 2.0 release…. I suspect there is some file that the scanner engine doesn’t like, because I get this mysterious

Service Executable has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

message….

It is MsMpEng.exe that is crashing - version 1.5.1941.0 - along with mpengine.dll version 1.1.3109.0 which is the associated library. This is strange as it seems to be the Windows Defender component that is having a hard time…

Sigh…. if you are experiencing this in your Windows Defender and/or Windows Live OneCare setup, please leave me a comment!

‘I keep getting the same sort of errors and problems with OneCare on one particular Machine that I have. The last .NET framework service pack 1.1 which came out in January 2008 really messed things up on this machine. I went through and removed all the .NET Framework and uninstalled/reinstalled WindowsOneCare, I ran the repair tools and things were better for about a week. Now I get the error message:

Windows Live OneCare Service has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

    Error signature: szAppName : winss.exe szAppVer : 2.0.2500.14 szModName : winss.exe
    szModVer : 2.0.2500.14 offset : 000d4eb2

I cannot start it up again…
I wonder why it is affecting this machine so much.
It is an Intel 3.0GHZ Dual Core with 2 GB Ram with 500GB HD. XP Home Edition SP2. All of my other computers run OneCare great.
I hate this… I wish the code were not in a download. Even if you buy the cd, all you are really getting is the product key and al .msi that takes you straight to the internet to download the installer and so on…

same exact problem as stated above. running windows defender and live one care. xp home sp 2. getting lots of errors and crashes. for example:
    rundll32.exe
    msmpeng.exe
    service executable
    msacui.exe

just tried adding defender and live one care folders to the list of excluded folders in each of those programs. it is not helping.

After a few days running OC 2.0, it seems to have stabilised (on a Dell Latitude D620 running XP SP2, and also a Dell Inspiron 6400 (aka the Inspiron E1505 also with XP SP2).

  4. Robin Says:

Ah correction, I guess I wrote too soon - yesterday, March 24th, while booting I got the “windows live onecare has encountered a problem” message. The strange thing is that the OneCare resident task icon was still on the status bar and showed a green good status.

I’m having the same problem. it keeps poping up all the time. and it doesn’t let me turn on the virus monitoring. Please advise. I was afraid this might be a new virus that maybe no one knows yet about.

To fix the issue “Error: Service executable has encountered a problem and needs to close” - Needs to uninstall Microsoft .Net Framework and re-install it. Also uninstall OneCare and re-install it

    @ Deepa

Thanks for contributing that solution that worked for you. I’m unable to validate it since I stopped getting that error message after a few days - perhaps an update to .net 3 framework.

Also, I’m in the process of evaluating OneCare 2.5 (beta) so will post about that experience soon.

I’ve been running OneCare now for about two weeks. I have 3 computers in my circle. One is an Athalon, one is a Pentium 4, and the other is ? They are all XP. I to started getting same message on the Pentium only. When I click the OneCare balloon that calls for action, it goes red and tells me that the virus scan is off. It is indeed off and I turn it on. The whole thing happens again in about an hour. I need to gather more data, and I will try to post it if it is anything different than I have seen here so far.
    thanks.

My problem is computer keeps shutting down and rebooting by itself. I have done various virus scans and removed files and folders which have helped.

Finally this morning it rebooted again and when it did I got the “Error: Service executable has encountered a problem and needs to close” message.
This is the first time I have gotten this message. My tech guy said he didn’t know what it is. I have been having this reboot problem for several weeks. but not with this message. He replaced a lot of parts and then said it’s a waste of time and wants to give me a new computer. I don’t want to have to go thru installing everything again. Are these problems related? Thanks for any help you extend. Carla

Carla - you are running OneCare 2.0 (final) on Windows XP with SP2 or SP 3 ? Did you try the solution proposed by Deepa above - http://www.robinmajumdar.com/2008/01/23/onecare-service-executable-has-encountered-a-problem-and-needs-to-close-error-message-crash/#comment-9997
