Dell 12 Days of Deals : Day 9 - LaCie External Blu-Ray Burner for $699 and Canon SD1000 for $199

As we awaken to a relatively foggy and cool -5c day here on the East Coast, Dell Canada has revealed their specials for Day 9 of the 12 days of dealsicon.

There are a few stocking stuffer good deals, including DVDs of The Bourne Ultimatum and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix for $19.98 each. I prefer box set of DVDs and with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD with us now, is it still worth buying DVDs? My answer is simple: yes, if you don’t own a 1080i or 1080p television.

The Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000icon (MS Part #69R-00007) at $29.99 down from $69.99 is a very nice deal and a high quality mouse that tracks at 1000dpi resolution. A few points to keep in mind include the size – these are smallish mice and if you have large hands, you may find yourself cramping. Also, since it is Bluetooth, you need to have a reliable Bluetooth receiver in your notebook computer.

The real interesting product today is the LaCie External Blu-Ray burnericon.

LaCie External USB 2.0 / Firewire Blu-Ray Burner

This USB 2.0 / FireWire burner lets you burn about to 50GB of data (or 4 hours of HD video) onto a single BD DVD disc. Now granted, the burnable Blu-Ray DVD discs are still pretty pricey (about $12-15 for 25GB and $35-40 for 50GB discs) this is still an interesting solution for data backups… and since it’s an external, you can take it with you to various machines or servers to do data backup. Remember that modern DVD discs do not last a lifetime so if it’s precious make TWO backups. That being said, have you made at least one backup of your data? Can you recover it?

Some of the LaCie Blu-Ray burner specs:

Read speed : 32x (CD) / 8x (DVD) / 2x (BD)

Write Speed: 24x (CD) / 8x (DVD±R) / 4x (DVD±R DL) / 2x (BD-R) / 2x (BD-R DL)

CD / DVD Rewrite Speed: 16x (CD) / 6x (DVD-RW) / 8x (DVD+RW) / 2x (BD-RE) / 2x (BD-RE DL)

Dell has the LaCie external Blu-Ray burner (Model # 301115U) for $699 shipped – down $700 from Dell’s regular price. The $699 price is cheaper than even the barebones resellers such as NCIX, DirectDial TDDirect etc… and Dell has it in stock and read to ship.

For those looking for a more than decent Canon digital camera, they have the SD1000 7.1 megapixel camera for $199icon. This camera lacks optical image stabilisation like on my SD700IS that I love for my coffee-induced shaky hands, but for $199 it’s a solid buy. Note that you can get it for about $170-175 from US etailers but then you have to deal with cross-border shipping and no Canon Canada warranty.
